Three Lakes Homes for Sale

Fathered by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1881, Three Lakes is a small community nestled amidst the 650,000-acre Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, known for its crystal-clear lakes, abundant fisheries, trophy deer and an array of wildlife species.

The community's greatest natural resource is the largest inland chain of lakes in the world, consisting of 28 interconnected lakes. Twenty of the lakes are located in Three Lakes. These twenty lakes have a surface area of 7,626 acres and a shoreline of 106 miles with 16 varieties of fish. On this sprawling chain, anglers find some of the best musky and walleye fishing in the northwoods, as well as perch, crappie, bluegill and bass. The variety of lakes and channels within the chain provide sufficient space for water-skiing, wake boarding, boating, canoeing and kayaking.

The Nicolet side of the National Forest offers spectacular opportunities for bicycling, hiking, birding, photography, hunting, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Downtown Three Lakes provides the old-fashioned charm of a store-front community.  Its main street is lit by antique lampposts and lined with unique gift shops, supper clubs, restaurants and other small businesses. A family owned winery, Three Lakes Winery is located right in the downtown area. The Historical Museum is one block off the main street, next to the library.

Every season presents its own spectacular and serene setting.  It is a four season playground for those who love nature and the great outdoors.  Close to Chicago, the Fox Valley area, Milwaukee and Minneapolis, Three Lakes is the perfect destination for weekend getaways, holiday breaks and extended vacations. Three Lakes, Wisconsin was named for the three primary lakes in the area: Maple, Townline, and Range Line lakes. The early industry in the town was logging and forestry. Three Lakes and the rest of the Northwoods supplied wood to build Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. During that time, most of the area's virgin forests were cleared and it wasn’t until the 1930s that the Civilian Conservation Corps began replanting them. As a result of these replanting efforts, logging and forestry continue to be an important industry in Three Lakes.

Three Lakes began growing as a tourist vacation destination in the late 1930s. The increasing availability of automobiles, combined with the roads that existed from the logging industry, made the lakes and forests of the Three Lakes area an attractive vacation destination.  Although tourism remains an important industry to the area, the town also has light manufacturing, a winery, an arts center and numerous retail businesses that have diversified its economy. The town has made substantial investments in developing high speed Internet and broadband capabilities.
